What is CBD?

CBD

If you have just started getting interested in CBD, you have probably heard people refer to it in several different ways. Some people talk about CBD isolate, others talk about full-spectrum CBD, and still others talk about broad-spectrum CBD. All the terminology can become confusing, so this blog is intended to clarify wha CBD is, how it can be used, and discuss some of its associated benefits.

What is CBD?

First let’s start with CBD; what exactly is it? Simply put, CBD is the non-psychoactive component of the hemp plant. The acronym CBD refers to cannabidiol – one of the 113 named cannabinoids present in the hemp plant, or cannabis sativa. In the case of the hemp plant, THC is the psychoactive element or the part that gets you “high.”

What Forms of CBD Can Be Consumed?

According to the 2018 Farm Bill that was recently passed, the legal limit for THC in CBD products is .3%. So while states that have legalized cannabis may be able to create, consume, and sell “full spectrum CBD” which contains all known cannabanoids as well as higher levels of THC, anyone 18 or older can legally obtain products with Broad Spectrum CBD or CBD Isolate. Broad Spectrum CBD is created by extracting CBD from a low THC hemp plant cultivar. The CBD is extracted from the plant to produce an oil that is primarily CBD, yet may have up to the legal limit of THC.

It also includes a majority of the other cannabidiols present in the plant, along with aromatics, chlorophyll, The CBD oil that remains can be consumed in a variety of different ways, with added naturally occurring aromatics from the hemp plant (or other plants in the case of vanilla or peppermint) to give it a more pleasant flavor and smell. For instance, the vanilla CBD oil an be added to your coffee with milk and sweetener to make a CBD latte. CBD Isolate is pure CBD with no residual THC. Essentially, a high-quality isolate will be 99.9% pure CBD. It has been isolated entirely from all other constituents of the hemp plant. This can be convenient for those who take very strict, regular drug tests for employment. Natural plant aromatics can then be added back to make it more flavorful.

What is the Entourage Effect?

Broad-spectrum CBD contains everything that the hemp plant contains except for THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. Broad spectrum CBD includes all of the healthy beneficially plant ingredients including cannabinoids, fatty acids, flavonoids, chlorophyll and terpenes. It still contains terpenes, which are the essential oils that contain many of the therapeutic and medical benefits contained in hemp. Terpenes contribute to the entourage effect. The compounds in hemp interact with one another in way that is synergetic. This creates an entourage effect that intensifies the therapeutic benefits of each individual compound.

What Are the Benefits of CBD?

In animals, CBD has been shown to reduce the number of animals that shown symptoms of seizures, although there was no change in the frequency of seizures. At low doses, CBD has been able to suppress seizures in humans, but the effectiveness differs from patient to patient. If used responsibly, broad-spectrum CBD can be a safe alternative to pharmaceuticals. They can be used to treat anxiety, sleep disorders, and chronic pain disorders. The therapeutic effects of CBD can make you feel calmer and more relaxed. It is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties that can help people who need pain relief.

Essentially, broad-spectrum CBD is a variety of CBD that lacks THC but still contains many of the medicinal and therapeutic properties attributed to the hemp plant. Broad-spectrum CBD has an entourage effect that magnifies some of the health benefits of hemp. It can be used to treat a range of problems in some individuals, including anxiety, stress, sleep issues, and pain.
